One question that we have received time and time again from our readership is whether or not renters are allowed to install grab bars if they have a disability.
So….we did our research and came up with an answer.

You must have a legal disability, so if you are not yet registered as having one, than you must do that first.

Drilling into Marble - Grab Bar Installation Tip
One of the local providers of grab bar installations, here in Pinellas County, Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County has give us some valuable insight as to how to drill into marble when installing grab bars.
Here is what we learned!
Here is what we learned!
- The tile bit being used for the drilling should also be fresh. Also, the installer should always have several extras ready.
- Once the location and drill holes for each grab bar have been clearly marked, score the drill points with a carbide punch and mallet. This prevents the drill bit from sliding around on the marble.
- Next, proceed by making initial holes, using a 1/4 inch tile bit. Once this been completed, widen them using a 5/16 inch tile bit.
- The marble is a very hard material and for that reason, drilling can be slow and unrelenting on the tile bit. It is important to take frequent breaks for drilling as well as dip the tile bit into a cup of water to prevent it from overheating and fracturing.
- Next, probe each hole to check for any obstacles.
- Proceed with toggles and anchors in each hole as well as fasteners when screwing in the bars.

DANGER! - Suction Grab Bars on Marble
We here at the Pinellas County Grab Bar Blog are issuing an important bathroom safety warning against using suction grab bars on a marble surface. There have been recent reports of injuries that could have been prevented, had people not put their trust in these devices as a cheap alternative to real permanent grab bars.
Looking close up it becomes obvious that Marble tiles are porous and contain tiny holes contrary to its seemingly smooth appearance from further away. These tiny air pockets allow air to seep in from underneath the suction cup and compromise its vacuum state. This process takes several hours before the grab bars are no longer suctioned properly to wall. This time period can often deceive people into thinking that these suction bars are secure, but that is only a temporary thing and within 24 hours the bars are no longer strongly secured to the wall. This has unfortunately led to many injurious falls that could have been prevented.
We urge you to contact a local grab bar installation specialist to have permanent grab bars installed. The leading provider in the area with a reputation of professionalism and reliability is Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County.

Choosing Grab Bar Locations
Making the decision to have grab bars installed and to make a strong commitment to bathroom safety and fall prevention is the first hurdle to overcome. However, once that is done it is important to choose the most optimal locations for each bar to be placed.
The most common locations are two grab bars for the shower stall and one next to the toilet, however these may vary from home to home and are based on each individual’s needs. A professional assessment is highly recommended. In general there is usually a 12 − 18 inch vertical bar placed at the entrance to the shower stall to assist with entering and exiting, especially when it involves stepping over a tub. Next, there is usually a 24-inch diagonal or horizontally positioned bar at the back wall of the shower stall to assist with support while bathing. Finally, the bar next to the toilet is usually located to one side of the toilet whenever possible to allow an individual to stabilize themselves while going from sitting to standing and vice versa.
Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County, a company that was started by Howard Cohen, a licensed physical therapist and grab bar installation specialist is known for having knowledgeable professionals who are able to work together with their customers to find the best locations for each bar. This usually entails a proper assessment of the physical condition and disabilities that each individual face.

What are some other Bathroom Safety Products?
Pinellas County Grab Bars is always looking out for the latest information on bathroom safety technology, not just grab bars. We just had a sit down with Howard Cohen, a licensed physical therapist and grab bar installation specialist for Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County and he gave us some recommendations on other bathroom safety products that could be used along with grab bars.
Here is a snippet our conversation:
Jay of Pinellas County Grab Bars: Howard, we are always getting questions from our readers here at the Pinellas County Grab Bars blog about whether there are other safety products other than just grab bars that can be useful for addressing mobility issues and disabilities. Could you please give us some recommendations for us to pass on to our readers.
Howard Cohen (Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County): I am glad that you asked Jay. I would be happy to make some recommendations of products that I have seen work exceptionally well with the aging community. If I were to name only one kind of product that is almost equally as important as grab bars, it is a non-slip flooring to help combat unexpected slips and falls.
Jay of Pinellas County Grab Bars: I have heard of these products. Are there any specific brands that you recommend for non-slip flooring?
Howard Cohen (Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County): Yes Jay, there are two brands that are reliable that I would encourage people look into. One is Dri-Dek and the other is DuraGrid. Both are made of separate plastic non-slip tiles that fit together and are easily assembled, and both can be easily cleaned by simply lifting them up. So they aren’t permanent, but still fit wall to wall so as not to slide around as compared to a normal bath mat. Many public pools use products like this around their facilities to prevent people from falling.

Metal Studs - Grab Bar Installation Advice
Once again the Pinellas County Grab Bars Blog is giving you the latest advice in grab bar installation from the pros! Today we are talking about what to do when installing into metal studs.
Here are the proper steps to follow:
*It is important to always hire a professional grab bar installation specialist who is aware of all these details and is experienced.
This information was provided to us by Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County.
Here are the proper steps to follow:
- Using a studfinder, locate where all the metal studs lie beneath the wall
- Next, drill a pilot hole first to see what is behind the wall
- Use a probe (6 inch rigid metal wire) to inspect the pilot hole to see if any obstacles lie beneath the wall.
- If free of obstacles, continue by expanding the holes with a half inch tile bit.
- For all of the holes use snap toggles (Toggler Snap Toggle) as your anchors. This is because metal studs have a lot of vertical strength but a lot less horizontal strength in comparison to wooden studs.
- Lastly, sometimes there is excess plastic from the toggles that may sneak out from underneath the grab bar flanges once they are secured. If this happens, carefully use a razor to trim the excess plastic making sure to not scratch the tile beneath.
*It is important to always hire a professional grab bar installation specialist who is aware of all these details and is experienced.

Is a Grab Bar Useful If I Already Have a 3 in 1 Commode?
Many of our readers of the Pinellas County Grab Bar Installation Blog have been asking whether or not grab bars are still useful near the toilet if one already has a 3 in 1 commode. We were unsure how to answer this so we inquired the help of Howard Cohen, a licensed physical therapist and grab bar installation specialist for the most prominent installer in Pinellas County, Mr. Grab Bar.
Here is what we found out…
When you already have a 3 in 1 commode or a raised toilet seat, it is easy to think that all of your mobility needs involving the toilet have been met, however upon close examination of the movements of going from sitting to standing, it turns out that there are some areas that are not properly addressed by the 3 in 1 commode or raised toilet seat. For instance, when an individual is reaching backwards to sit down, the arm rests of the elevated seat provide little assistance. An intermediary and strategically placed grab bar could easily help assist a patient in lowering themselves.
So as it turns out, the best advice for people with serious mobility issues is to use a grab bar in conjunction with a raised toilet seat or 3 in 1 commode and one or the other.

How to Mark Up Drill Hole Locations - Grab Bar Installation
The Pinellas County Grab Bars Blog has made it its mission to find the latest tips, advice and information regarding the installation of grab bars. In today’s issue we spoke with some of the leading providers of grab bar installations in Pinellas County to find out how to mark up drill hole locations.
Here is what we found out:
Hint: You usually will not use all of the marked drill holes, however it is smart to always have as many as possible marked.
Here is what we found out:
- For each grab bar, choose 3 or more holes that could potential be used (note: this can vary depending on the grab bar).
- Once the optimum location of each bar has been decided and informed by proper inspection using a stud finder, place each grab bar, one at a time against the wall to act as a template. Using a pencil for porous tiles and/or dry wall and a dry erase marker for glossy tiles, mark each potential drill hole.
- Note: use dry wall tape in the rare instance of dark or black tiles. Then put your markings with the dry erase marker on the tape.
- To clean up your markings after the installation, use a dry paper towel for dry erase marker or a high quality eraser for pencil markings.
Hint: You usually will not use all of the marked drill holes, however it is smart to always have as many as possible marked.

More Grab Bar Installation Tips! - Scoring a Tile
Scoring a tile properly before beginning to drill is a critical step in a professional grab bar installation. Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County has done us the courtesy of enlightening us on this subject.
Here is what we learned:
Doing this properly prior to beginning to drill will ensure that the drill bit does not slide outside of the marked drill hole locations. If this step is not properly adhered to, it could likely lead to scratching of the tiles which won’t be covered up by the grab bar.
Here is what we learned:
- Use the grab bar as a template to mark all the drill holes with a dry erase marker for glossy tile or a pencil for dry wall and porous tile.
- Next, using a carbide punch and a mallet, score the drill holes by tapping gently.
Doing this properly prior to beginning to drill will ensure that the drill bit does not slide outside of the marked drill hole locations. If this step is not properly adhered to, it could likely lead to scratching of the tiles which won’t be covered up by the grab bar.

Here is what we learned:
- Assessment of the condition within a wall and the presence of potential obstacles is critical to a successful grab bar installation. A short rigid metal wire, approximately 6 inches in length is often used to determine the following:
- The depth between the drill hole entrance and the back of the wall
- The presence of obstacles
- Determination of the studs (metal or wood), and whether there are any potential hazards including pipes, ducts etc.
- When using the probe to make these assessments, please make sure to do the following:
- To measure the depth of the wall, simply bend the remaining portion of the probe that is sticking out of the drill hole. If the wall is too deep, then there is no worry.

- A professional installer should constantly inspect drill bits for wear and tear prior to their usage.
- A professional installer should take frequent breaks in between drilling to allow their drill bits to cool down. Neglecting this could lead to the drill bit cracking because of the extreme heat build-up.
- Often times professionals will dip their drill bits into a cup of water in order to reduce the temperature of the bit and increase its longevity.
