Choosing Grab Bar Locations

Making the decision to have grab bars installed and to make a strong commitment to bathroom safety and fall prevention is the first hurdle to overcome. However, once that is done it is important to choose the most optimal locations for each bar to be placed.

The most common locations are two grab bars for the shower stall and one next to the toilet, however these may vary from home to home and are based on each individual’s needs. A professional assessment is highly recommended. In general there is usually a 12 − 18 inch vertical bar placed at the entrance to the shower stall to assist with entering and exiting, especially when it involves stepping over a tub. Next, there is usually a 24-inch diagonal or horizontally positioned bar at the back wall of the shower stall to assist with support while bathing. Finally, the bar next to the toilet is usually located to one side of the toilet whenever possible to allow an individual to stabilize themselves while going from sitting to standing and vice versa.

Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County, a company that was started by Howard Cohen, a licensed physical therapist and grab bar installation specialist is known for having knowledgeable professionals who are able to work together with their customers to find the best locations for each bar. This usually entails a proper assessment of the physical condition and disabilities that each individual face.
