Many of our readers of the Pinellas County Grab Bar Installation Blog have been asking whether or not grab bars are still useful near the toilet if one already has a 3 in 1 commode. We were unsure how to answer this so we inquired the help of Howard Cohen, a licensed physical therapist and grab bar installation specialist for the most prominent installer in Pinellas County, Mr. Grab Bar.
Here is what we found out…
When you already have a 3 in 1 commode or a raised toilet seat, it is easy to think that all of your mobility needs involving the toilet have been met, however upon close examination of the movements of going from sitting to standing, it turns out that there are some areas that are not properly addressed by the 3 in 1 commode or raised toilet seat. For instance, when an individual is reaching backwards to sit down, the arm rests of the elevated seat provide little assistance. An intermediary and strategically placed grab bar could easily help assist a patient in lowering themselves.
So as it turns out, the best advice for people with serious mobility issues is to use a grab bar in conjunction with a raised toilet seat or 3 in 1 commode and one or the other.
