Can Renters Install Grab Bars?

One question that we have received time and time again from our readership is whether or not renters are allowed to install grab bars if they have a disability.

So….we did our research and came up with an answer.

In accordance with the current laws as stated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, landlords are legally obligated to allow any tenant with a disability to have grab bars among many other safety devices installed. You must have a legal disability, so if you are not yet registered as having one, than you must do that first.

For installs in Pinellas County, we recommend Mr. Grab Bar.

Drilling into Marble - Grab Bar Installation Tip

One of the local providers of grab bar installations, here in Pinellas County, Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County has give us some valuable insight as to how to drill into marble when installing grab bars.

Here is what we learned!

  • The tile bit being used for the drilling should also be fresh. Also, the installer should always have several extras ready.
  • Once the location and drill holes for each grab bar have been clearly marked, score the drill points with a carbide punch and mallet. This prevents the drill bit from sliding around on the marble.
  • Next, proceed by making initial holes, using a 1/4 inch tile bit. Once this been completed, widen them using a 5/16 inch tile bit.
  • The marble is a very hard material and for that reason, drilling can be slow and unrelenting on the tile bit. It is important to take frequent breaks for drilling as well as dip the tile bit into a cup of water to prevent it from overheating and fracturing.
  • Next, probe each hole to check for any obstacles.
  • Proceed with toggles and anchors in each hole as well as fasteners when screwing in the bars.

Grab Bar Installation Advice - Surveying the Location

Before installing grab bars it is critical that the installation specialist survey the location. The Pinellas County Grab Bars blog went to Mr. Grab Bar of Pinellas County for some helpful advice on the topic.

Here is what we learned:

  • Survey the exterior walls of the home to find out what they are made of, wood framing, poured concrete or cinder block.
  • Find out the age of the home in order to gauge expectations.
  • Using information regarding the exterior construction, determine the most likely materials to be within the inside of the of outer walls.
  • Secure or temporarily remove items attached to the wall or on shelves that are fragile and could come loose from vibrations.
  • Be aware of any electrical appliances that could present a safety risk when drilling.
  • Assess the condition of the interior walls and tiles. This could effect the strength of the grab bars and can be used to prevent wall damage.
  • Determine what materials the tiles are made of. This could effect how to most effectively drill into the walls.
